Well - here we go again folks. As anyone who has attended one of my lectures can tell you -- I hate "Junk Science". In the past few weeks, studies were published that, in my opinion, are probably the best examples of junk science I've seen.
One report was about vitamins increasing mortality among older women, and the other was that vitamin E increases the risk of prostate cancer. Junk Science at its best! (Or worst!)
Of course the major media (whose revenue comes mainly from pharmaceutical advertising) jumped all over the reports and produced lots of "scare" headlines.
This is so pathetic, that I really don't want to legitimize it by devoting a lot of space about it, so I limited myself to writing only the first article in this newsletter in which I present my opinion. My article also refers you to articles on other major health sites that present a far more comprehensive view about these unscrupulous "scare" tactics.
For the rest of this newsletter, I present some studies and articles about the benefits of certain vitamins in helping support various health issues, and at the bottom, we cover some late-breaking news and misc. items not related to the overall newsletter theme.
Enjoy! ........... Jim

Two new "studies" push the claim that vitamins will increase mortality in older women, and vitamin E will cause prostate cancer in men. More "Junk Science" from the conventional medical establishment embellished into "scare" headlines by the mainstream media.

Vitamin E tocotrienols protect the heart and prevent metabolic syndrome.

| |
Few people pay attention to the importance of vitamin E, much less to the multi-fractioned mirror image versions of the vitamin known as isomers (consisting of tocotrienols and tocopherols). Vitamin E has long been known as a nutrient that may play a role in maintaining heart health, but extensive new research explains that the vitamin in all its potent forms is required to dramatically lower the risk of heart disease and heart attack.

| Vitamin D and Cardiovascular Disease | |
Substantial evidence suggests that a large portion of the population have suboptimal levels of vitamin D, which may adversely affect the cardiovascular (CV) system, including increasing levels of parathyroid hormone, activating the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and increasing insulin resistance, thus leading to hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy, metabolic syndrome/diabetes mellitus, systemic inflammation, and increased risk of atherosclerosis and CV disease events.

| B vitamins beat dementia. | |
I know plenty of seniors who would pop pretty much any pill -- risks and costs be damned -- if it meant they'd never have to battle Alzheimer's disease. But it turns out they may not have to face any risks at all to get a leg up on dementia -- because the latest research confirms that simple, safe and widely available B vitamins can dramatically slow the rate of cognitive decline.

Retractions of Scientific Studies Surging
| | While the major media devotes its attention to disparaging vitamins, minerals, and any other natural product that might help someone prevent illness or regain health, the dangers of incorrect data in scientific studies due to errors and outright fraud have increased drastically!
We take for granted that prescription drugs are safe because they are approved by the FDA, but what if the data the FDA uses to approve them is incorrect or specifically manipulated to show efficacy?
According to an analysis published in the Journal of Medical Ethics, retractions of studies published in medical journals related to fraud rose more than sevenfold between 2004 and 2009, exceeding a twofold rise traced to mistakes.
