Sorry about the long delay between newsletters -- I got snagged by a bunch of personal problems.

Anyway, today's newsletter is about hormones--a topic that interests all of us.

Both men and women are subject to significant hormonal fluctuations with aging.  These changes result in various problems from hot flashes and night sweats in women to erectile dysfunction (ED) and prostate problems in men. Getting your hormones tested and then balancing them can go a long way to helping you feel better.

Since this is a universal problem of aging in both sexes, this newsletter covers some of the things that exacerbate these hormonal changes as well as some of the products that can help with them.  The newsletter is split into two sections; one labeled For the Ladies and the second For the Guys.

Enjoy! ........... Jim

Many folks don't realize that hormone levels can be altered by external influences. This article examines some of the environmental and lifestyle issues that cause or exacerbate hormone imbalances.

How to Prevent and Eliminate Fibroids Naturally

As women near the onset of menopause, hormonal changes increase the likelihood of fibroid development. Lower amounts of progesterone and increased amounts of estrogen can cause fibroids, which can lead to menstrual problems, anemia, dizziness and fatigue.

Loss of sex drive after menopause affects health, quality of life

Women with low levels of sexual desire, often as a result of menopause, are more likely to be depressed and to suffer physical symptoms such as back pain and memory problems than women who report higher levels of desire, according to a new study by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals.

Postmenopausal women who take antidepressants face increased risk for stroke and death
Postmenopausal women who take antidepressants face a small but statistically significant increased risk for stroke and death compared with those who do not take the drugs. The new findings are from the federally-funded, multi-institution, Women's Health Initiative Study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, and the results are published in the December 14 online edition of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Too Many Hysterectomies Being Unnecessarily Performed

Too many doctors are resorting to hysterectomies as a cure for a condition known as menorrhagia when other treatments are still available, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists...

Natural Solutions Help Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumor growths in or on the muscular wall of the womb. They typically affect about 20% of women over age of 30. Current research has shown that fibroid tumors are a symptom of estrogen dominance and can be prevented or even reversed through healthy lifestyle.

For the Guys
Hormone Balancing Prevents Cancer
Hormonal imbalance, especially from estrogen dominance, is not limited to women. It is also a problem with men these days, thanks to the environmental hazards of environmental estrogen mimicking chemicals, known as xenoestrogens.

High Levels of BPA Linked to Sexual Dysfunction

A recent study published in the journal Human Reproduction has found that exposure to high levels of bisphenol A (BPA) is causing various reproductive problems in men. Funded by the federal government, the study revealed.

Men with erectile dysfunction, low testosterone at higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease
Research presented at the European Congress of Endocrinology shows for the first time that men with erectile dysfunction and low testosterone have a higher than normal risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Further work from the same research group shows that obesity is also associated with an impairment of blood flow to the penis, which in turn is also associated with cardiovascular disease in men with erectile dysfunction.

Low testosterone levels can impact sleep quality
At 30 years old, male testosterone levels drop by one to two percent annually. By age 40, men's quality of sleep begins to diminish. Could there be a link between decreased testosterone and reduced sleep?

Using Multiple Drugs (Polypharmacy) is Linked to Erectile Dysfunction
According to new research, the incidence of erectile dysfunction (ED) rises in likelihood and severity as the number of medications a man takes increases. This is true even after accounting for the underlying medical conditions for which these medications are used.

French Study Links Obesity to Bad Sexual Health.
Now French researchers have found a link between obesity and bad sexual health in their study of 12,364 men and women aged 18 to 69 ranging from normal weight to obese who lived in France in 2006.

Deaths from Drugs and Vitamins

While the major media is busy disparaging vitamins, minerals, and other natural products, the effects of pharmaceutical drugs on the public are largely ignored. It is interesting to note that over the past 54 years there have only been 11 claims of vitamin-related death, all of which provided no substantial evidence to link vitamins to the cause of death.

On the other hand, over the past 27 years (the period for which data is available) there have been over 3 million deaths related to prescription drug use. While some of these are related to drug abuse, a substantial portion are related to pharmaceuticals legally prescribed by a doctor to help with a medical condition. In fact, most drugs list more than 70 side effects on their FDA mandated extended documentation (which many pharmacies don't even provide, and many patients (particularly seniors with poor eyesight) cannot read due to the miniscule type face used on the documentation.

This is not to say that you should not take any drugs. But, if you condition can be helped naturally, with vitamins, minerals, or herbals, you might be far safer going in that direction.

Looks Like we are Winning This Battle Against the FDA

Bolstered by a massive outpouring of support, the Alliance for Natural Health has formally asked the FDA to to withdraw its New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) draft guidance completely!

The period for comments to the FDA on the draft guidance on NDI notifications closed on December 2. During the comment period, hundreds of thousands of messages, and about 20,000 phone calls hit the FDA and Congress from people like you.

The Alliance for Natural Health believes the FDA will be unable incorporate enough changes to their draft guidance to bring it in line with existing law, preserve supplement access for customers, and remove needless regulatory hurdles for industry. Because of this, they have formally requested that the FDA withdraw the draft guidance at the earliest possible moment.

Did You Ever Wonder Why Pharmaceutical Companies Get a Free Ride?
There is a surprising reason why the government won't go after drug companies for serious crimes. Government programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Administration would then be barred from doing business with them!

In a recent action the Department of Justice announced that Merck has agreed to pay a $321 million criminal fine and plead guilty to one misdemeanor count of illegally introducing a drug into interstate commerce. Merck also is paying $426 million to the federal government and $202 million to state Medicaid agencies to settle settle civil claims that its marketing caused doctors to prescribe and bill the government for Vioxx they otherwise would not have prescribed.

Please note that these settlements are for rather minor infractions-not for deliberately concealing the danger of a killing drug from patients, the medical community, and their investors. Despite the serious consequences of Merck's actions, the government won't prosecute them for any serious charges-because, if they did and won, it would mean they would have to stop doing business with Merck in the future! Federal law makes it illegal for Medicare and Medicaid to do business with "an excluded or debarred entity resulting from serious criminal charges."

This means that when a company becomes too deeply enmeshed in the government's business, these companies simply become too big to prosecute!
