Nov. 29, 2014

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's been a while since my last newsletter. I have been a little busier than usual, but I think I've finally got my schedule to be less stressed, so I'll be able to get my newsletters out more frequently.

In my practice over the years, I have had the unfortunate experience of seeing several clients that were significantly harmed from the side effects of a prescription drug. Some received cash settlements through class action lawsuits. However, there is no amount of money that can compensate for a loss of mobility or cognitive ability from a stroke or other serious event.

Every patient prescribed a prescription drug should carefully weigh and discuss with the prescribing doctor, both the potential benefits of using the drug as well as its potential side effects.

The first article of this newsletter discusses this. The other links point out some of the side effects of common drugs that many patients are not aware of.

As always, I appreciate your inputs and hope you enjoy this newsletter.

Jury Hits Actos Makers With $9 Billion in Damages

According to a 2012 study in British Medical Journal, the drug Pioglitazone (Actos) is associated with an increased risk for bladder cancer among persons with type 2 diabetes. Earlier this year, manufacturers Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. and Eli Lilly were slapped with $9 billion in punitive damages after a federal jury concluded cancer risks of Actos were deliberately concealed.

Want to Keep Your Breasts? - Be Careful About Using Antidepressants.

Researchers recently found that paroxetine (the active ingredient in Paxil and Pexeva--some of the most widely prescribed SSRI antidepressants), has an estrogenic effect that likely promotes the development and growth of breast tumors in women.

High-Potency Statins Are Associated with Excess Risk for Diabetes.
Recent studies have shown that statin drugs (used for cholesterol control) are linked to increased risk of developing diabetes. These findings prompted the FDA to require label changes for statins to address this concern, but few patients are aware of them.

Do Cholesterol Drugs Have Men By Their Gonads?
Cholesterol-lowering agents in the statin drug class have long been linked with erectile dysfunction and low testosterone. This new study found that this class of drugs may also be causing significant and lasting damage to men's testicles and sperm, and by implication, possibly the health of future generations.

FDA Approves Controversial Diet Drug Despite Warning of Suicide Risk
The FDA recently approved Contrave, a diet drug initially denied approval in 2011 due to concerns about increased blood pressure and rapid pulse. But, rather than addressing the safety issues, the manufacturer simply commissioned another study, which seems to have been enough for FDA to green-light the drug.

Other Interesting Tidbits

Do We Need an Independant Agency to Oversee Pharmaceutical Companies?

For those who still have trouble believing that pharmaceutical companies put profit way ahead of patient safety, and that all FDA approved drugs and medical devices are inherently safe, read this very comprehensive article.

Keep in mind that the website that is providing this article is operated by a legal firm that works with class-action lawsuits. However, their stated mission is to help people to make a stand against prescription drugs that have harmful side effects and medical devices that cause damage by providing accurate and  comprehensive information.

Merck's Former Doctor Predicts Gardasil to Become Medical Scandal.

As you all know -- I am not a big fan of the Gardasil vaccine. I have written about it several times over the past few years. This article is an interesting take by Dr. Dalbergue, a former pharmaceutical industry physician with Gardasil manufacturer Merck.
